Like most big cities in the United States, crime is an issue in Phoenix, Arizona. Whether it’s violent crimes like murder and sexual assault or property crimes such as vandalism and theft, there’s no denying that Phoenix sees its share of criminal activity.

Based on recent statistics, here are a few of the safest neighborhoods in the greater Phoenix area:
Paradise Valley is sometimes called the Beverly Hills of the desert, as it is an affluent area with plenty of shopping, dining, and luxury lodging. Not surprisingly, it’s also one of the safest parts of the city.

Deer Valley is situated between Desert View and Paradise Valley. It’s a perfect place for families to settle, as it boasts a low crime rate, highly rated schools, and lots of indoor and outdoor activities.
Like Desert View, North Gateway offers breathtaking panoramas of the Sonoran Desert. It’s a large suburban community characterized by comfortable housing and an abundance of amenities. Crime rates in master-planned communities like these tend to be low, and North Gateway is no exception.
With its stunning natural aesthetics and host of modern conveniences, Ahwatukee Foothills is perfect for those looking for a blend of laid-back leisure and adventure.

Now for the flip side: the most dangerous neighborhoods in Phoenix based on recent crime data.
Central City is located in Phoenix’s historic district. Its alarmingly high crime rate causes it to appear constantly on lists of the worst areas in Phoenix. As a result, there tends to be a heavy police presence in this part of the city.
Encanto is something of a paradox: it’s statistically dangerous, but it’s also known to be one of the quieter parts of town. Crime still occurs regularly, but it’s mainly of the non-violent variety.
If you’re thinking about stopping in Encanto, take steps to safeguard your belongings and avoid walking around alone, especially at night.
Alhambra was one of the first subdivisions in Phoenix. The addition of low-income housing over the decades has made it one of the city’s most affordable places to live.
Alhambra routinely receives mixed reviews. Some see it as a safe — albeit disadvantaged — community, while others feel it is best avoided. Regardless, it has a reputation for being one of the rougher sections of Phoenix.
South Mountain is undeniably beautiful, but unfortunately, that doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s known for having a crime problem. Gang culture and violent attacks are both major issues in South Mountain. By some estimates, residents have a 1 in 22 chance of becoming victims of violent crime.
Maryvale once had designs to become one of Phoenix’s safest and most attractive neighborhoods. Today, however, it’s noteworthy for an entirely different reason.
Other, nicer neighborhoods around Maryvale, such as Glendale, have helped keep its property value elevated, but both violent and non-violent crime nonetheless remain a problem.
Regardless of whether you’re planning a permanent move or a short vacation, it’s a good idea to stick close to the more secure sections of Phoenix. Doing so will better ensure that you stay safe on the streets of Arizona.
