In Arizona, both students and their parents or guardians can face consequences for truancy. Students who are habitually truant can be found “incorrigible” and sent to juvenile courts. They can also be fined and required to complete work hours, attend counseling, or attend education classes.
Parents or guardians facing truancy charges can also be fined, required to attend classes, and charged with a class 3 misdemeanor. Parents charged with a class 3 misdemeanor can be fined up to $500 and/or a jail sentence of up to 30 days.
In addition to legal penalties, data shows that habitually truant minors are at an increased risk of juvenile delinquency, criminal activity as an adult, and drug use.
